Life Lessons

I grew up on a farm with an assortment of animals that supplied food and income for our large family.

With cows came milk, and with the milk came cream that settled to the top.  Some cream was sold, some used for cooking and some made into butter.

That hands on process was done with our butter churn, glass jar and lid holding wooden paddles and a red hand crank on the side.

About a gallon of cream went into the jar, paddle lid put on tight and the churning would begin.

The mindless turning of the handle for what seemed like forever, would be handed off to another sibling in hopes that their efforts would yield the promised eventual transformation from liquid to butter.

Almost every time we would give up just before the change would occur.  We would whine to Dad who would patiently take over and consistently spin the crank at a faster speed than we were able to do and I swear that in about 5 minutes there would be butter!

Lots of life lessons here but perhaps it’s just about how to make butter!
